Description

This course is designed to develop the oral communication, reading, writing, and media literacy skills that students need for success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives. Students will analyse literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret informational and graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on the use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. The course is intended to prepare students for the Grade 10 academic English course, which leads to university or college preparation courses in Grades 11 and 12.

At the end of each unit we will be reviewing our learning goals and establishing how successful we've been in achieving them.  This will allow us to assess our learning and understanding so that we may revisit concepts in the event that they are not clear.

At the end of our short stories unit, you will be able to:

- identify and apply the key elements of short stories 

- identify the different elements of setting and how setting is key within a short story 

-  identify, understand, and apply  your knowledge of literary devices to various texts 

- identify and describe the importance of various perspectives both when reading and creating a piece of literature 

- make inferences and form opinions on a variety of texts and subjects

At the end of this unit, you will be able to:

- identify and explain symbols, motifs and themes in a Shakespearean play

- create an outline, thesis statement, rough draft, and final copy of an essay where themes and character development will be analyzed

- identify and apply different literary elements of drama to the Shakespearean play such as metaphor, satire, foreshadowing and imagery

- identify different forms of irony in drama such as dramatic irony, situational irony, etc.
