Description

This course is exploratory in nature, offering an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials by using a range of media, processes, techniques, and styles. Students will use the creative and critical analysis processes and will interpret art within a personal, contemporary, and historical context. Throughout the course, students examine and use critical thinking and problem solving strategies to inform their creative process while building a presentation portfolio. Students will also analyse art works and study aspects of western art history, as well as art forms from Canada and other parts of the world. Units are supported and developed through a variety of sketchbook and preliminary assignments, always focusing on the design process. Teaching and learning will emphasize theoretic and practical media applications. The development of independent research and learning skills will be emphasized
